Ludwig Schokolade (Trumpf, Mauxion, Schogetten, Fritt)

          During study trips in the mid-nineteenth century, pharmacist Leonhard Monheim discovered a precious, new luxury food: chocolate. With the help of an Italian chocolatier, his first product was manufactured from 1857 onwards. Up to 400 health chocolate bars were made daily by hand. Leonard Monheim sold them in his pharmacy under the name ‘Trumpf’, laying the foundations for Ludwig Schokolade’s success story.
          In 1865, to meet the rapidly rising demand for his chocolate, Leonhard Monheim switched from manufacture by hand to machine production. Special equipment acquired from France simplified the manufacturing process, made new production techniques possible and increased production capacity.
          With the introduction of new recipes and preparation techniques the company witnessed significant growth. The first chocolate factory was opened in 1903 in Aachen, where the finest boxed chocolates could also be produced in large quantities. Aachen is the westernmost city in Germany, located near the borders with Belgium and the Netherlands.
          The demand for Trumpf chocolate continued to rise – and production capacity grew accordingly: another factory opened its gates in Berlin in 1921. In the same year an innovation was launched in the form of the Praletten chocolate bar which soon enjoyed a high degree of popularity and became a classic.
          As the fifties progressed, Leonard Monheim AG became one of Europe’s biggest manufacturers of chocolate and cocoa products. The opening of a third factory in Saarlouis boosted the company’s success. Saarlouis is located close to the French border and not far from the Luxembourg border.The growing international business was also expanded with the addition of the traditional Mauxion brand: its integration in 1958 was a further milestone in the company’s history.
          1962 was a special year, with the introduction of a real innovation in the world of chocolate bars – the Schogetten chocolate bar, uniquely divided into individual segments. Schogetten quickly made chocolate history. The success which it continues to enjoy to this day has made Schogetten one of the best known chocolate brands of all.
          In 1966 the chocolate speciality Edle Tropfen in Nuss was launched on the market. The combination of classic liqueurs, smooth chocolate and crunchy nuts has been delighting connoisseurs ever since. To this day, Edle Tropfen in Nuss is significant not only to the Ludwig Schokolade product range, but also to the liqueur segment of the chocolate market, making its mark in its own inimitable style.
          Leonard Monheim AG has been trading as Ludwig Schokolade GmbH & Co. KG since 1986.
The company’s competitive capabilities were significantly boosted in 1998: incorporation into the globally operating Krüger Group set the course for a successful future in the national and international markets and created new potential for the 21st century.
          The Polish company Inda Chocolate was acquired in 2007, significantly enhancing the product range in the area of chocolate bars.
          Since 2010, new perspectives opened up following the takeover of Fuchs & Hoffmann GmbH (Hoco). The move secured the supply of high-quality cocoa mass and chocolate liquor while also establishing access to an attractive industry sector.
          In 2014, Ludwig Schokolade emphasised the importance of sustainability in its business activities with the establishment of the Suscom company group. Suscom works specifically through a subsidiary at a local level with farmers and cocoa cooperatives in the Ivory Coast. It purchases certified raw cocoa from sustainably managed farms and exports it to Germany.
