The American group DeVry arrived in Brazil in 2009 and has the country as its sole investment outside the US. It has been so far focused on the the North and Northeast. In 2014, DeVry acquired São Paulo-based Damásio Educacional, a school network that offers preparatory courses for the examination of OAB, the Brazilian Bar Association. In these six years, DeVry made nine acquisitions in Brazil, with investments totaling R$570 million. In the fiscal year ended in September 2015, DeVry's global revenues totaled about $2 billion, and the company has 230,000 students.
In Dezember 2015, the american company DeVry acquired Ibmec, paying about R$674 million for a 96.4% stake in the prestigious business school. De Vry's acquisition of Ibmec marks strategic landing in São Paulo. In addition to the brand’s strength, the transaction stands out because starting next year Ibmec will be able to open a unit in São Paulo, which concentrates the highest demand for economics, finance and management programs. The acquisition of Ibmec also marks the definitive landing of DeVry in São Paulo.
In the United States, DeVry has diversified the business to not depend on student government funding. In the last decade, it was no longer only a higher-education institution, and now has preparatory courses and specialized universities in health, which have a high average price. In Brazil, it also has this strategy of diversification and less dependence on the Fies [the federal government student-loan program], says Carlos Alberto Degas Filgueira, president of DeVry Brasil.

O negócio foi fechado com a aquisição de 100% da Adtalem Brasil, grupo educacional americano que no país é dono de 12 instituições como Ibmec e Damásio, por R$ 1,9 bilhão.
A empresa americana foi obrigada a pagar uma indenização de US$ 100 milhões e vender a DeVry, principal instituição do grupo, de graça após acusações de fraudes com alunos.
