Lala’s history began in 1949, when a group of small producers founded the Union of Milk Producers of Torreón, in the Comarca Lagunera, center-north of Mexico. In the following year, they founded La Pasteurizadora Laguna. In 1956, another group of producers created Pasteurizadora Nazas in Gómez Palacio, in the Durango state in the northwest of the country.
In 1977, the two dairy companies joined, originating the current Lala. After that, the group made acquisitions in Mexico and in Central America.
Currently, Lala has 22 plants, 14 of them in Mexico, 5 in Central America and 3 in the US. It produces milk, butter, yogurt, cheese, cream, among others.
Lala is soon expected to reach a deal to acquire Vigor Alimentos, dairy producer of J&F Investimentos, for R$5.7 billion, including debt. Lala attributed the R$5.7 billion value for 100% of Vigor and 100% of Itambé, in which Vigor holds a 50% stake. The other half of Itambé belongs to the Central Cooperative of Rural Producers of Minas Gerais (CCPR). Lala valued Vigor including its debt of about R$900 million.
With the acquisition, the company will have 15 factories in Brazil that produce basically the same types of products. It is likely to be number 3 in purchase of milk, considering that Itambé already occupied such position with 1.1 billion liters, and Vigor purchased 311 million liters in 2016.
